Dental veneers are very thin, durable, tooth-colored coverings that are placed on the front surfaces of teeth to correct an array of cosmetic issues. In recent years, veneers have become a very popular option for helping patients of all ages correct aesthetic defects so they can enjoy more beautiful smiles and greater confidence.
Veneers can be used to correct the appearance of many cosmetic defects, including:
Because they can be tinted to match any tooth color, they blend perfectly with neighboring teeth to create a more naturally beautiful smile.
Veneer application typically takes two visits. At the first appointment, the tooth surface will be prepared. A small amount of tooth material will be removed to make room for the veneer so it doesn’t extend above or beyond the profile of the neighboring teeth. An impression will be taken and used to create the veneer and a temporary veneer will be placed over the tooth to protect it. The tooth color will also be selected. At the second appointment, the temporary veneer will be removed and the tooth surface will be carefully cleaned, then the veneer will be placed on the tooth using a very strong dental adhesive. A final shaping and buffing will ensure it feels completely natural and looks great.
With proper care including brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleaning, a veneer can last 10 years or more.
Veneers are made of very durable and stain-resistant porcelain, and they’re very difficult to discolor. However, repeated exposures to foods like coffee and red wine can take a toll over time, so be sure to rinse after consuming these products to keep both the veneer and the natural tooth surfaces as white as possible.
