Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are medical-grade metal posts implanted into the jaw bone and used to support a prosthetic tooth or crown. Implants can also be used to support a denture for patients missing multiple teeth. In recent years, implants have become a very popular alternative to bridges and dentures for patients who need to replace one or more missing teeth.

What happens during the implant procedure?

The implant procedure takes three or more visits to complete. During the first appointment, the metal post is implanted into the jaw bone and then allowed to remain undisturbed for several weeks to enable the post and the bone tissue to fuse together. When there isn’t enough bone to support the implant, a bone graft can be performed to supplement the existing bone with bone tissue removed from another area of the mouth. At the second appointment, a second piece called an abutment will be attached to the post and an impression will be taken and sent to the dental lab where the crown will be created. At the third visit, the crown will be attached to the abutment part of the implant and then carefully adjusted for a perfect fit.

Are implants better than bridges or dentures?

Dental implants offer several advantages over dentures and bridges:

  • Because they’re attached to the jaw, they look and work like a natural tooth, and they also tend to be more comfortable, especially when eating.
  • There’s no risk of embarrassing slippage or sore spots that occur when dentures become loose or ill-fitting.
  • They’re easier to care for than most bridges – just brush and floss like a natural tooth.
  • Finally, because they’re implanted into the bone, implants stimulate the replacement of bone tissue just like a natural tooth root, avoiding bone atrophy that can weaken surrounding teeth and cause additional tooth loss. Bridges and dentures rest on the gums and cannot promote the continual replacement of “old” bone.

Plus, implants can be used in areas of the mouth where a bridge cannot be used, including areas where there aren’t healthy teeth to support a bridge.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, an implant can last indefinitely.
